Kenmore, Perthshire

Kenmore is a small village in Perthshire positioned where Loch Tay flows into the River Tay.
Kenmore's attractions include water sports, fishing, hill walking and visiting Taymouth Castle, a privately owned castle which has a fine golf course in its grounds.

Kenmore: A Charming Holiday Destination

Set amidst the breathtaking mountains of the Scottish highlands in Perthshire is a small but beautiful village of Kenmore.  It lies on the east of Loch Tay.  With the loch to the south and west of the village and the River Tay to the north, the views around it, is simply stunning.

Kenmore History

According to Kenmore history, the village can trace its origin way back to the 16th Century.  Kenmore was originally situated two miles from its current location, north of the river, and was then called Inchadney.  In 1540, the entire village was moved to the headland of the loch when Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy built the Balloch Castle on the other side of the river.  The village name was then changed to Kenmore which is Scottish Gaelic for ‘large or big head’.  However, the current layout of the village you see today was designed in 1760 by the 3rd Earl of Breadalbane.  Kenmore and the other three adjoining village, Amulree, Acharn and Ardtalnaig are now a conservation area.

Kenmore Hotels

Right bang in the middle of the village is the square, lined with beautiful white old buildings.  Situated here is one of the oldest Kenmore hotels, which also claims to be the oldest inn in Scotland, Kenmore Hotel.  Built sometime in 1572, the hotel looks imposing.  Since its creation, ‘The Square’ remains the same, with the exception of cars instead of horses and carts.

With its charm and character coupled with it stunning surrounding, Kenmore is a perfect holiday destination.  It offers a wide range of outdoor activities from fishing, walking to playing golf. 

Kenmore Walks

If you love walking holidays, Kenmore walks offer both gentle and challenging trails.  For gentle strolls you can visit the Taymouth Castle Estate.  Here, you can have a leisurely walk along tree lined paths.  A close inspection of the Kenmore map will give you more ideas of idyllic places to wander.

For the more challenging walks, you can head to Glen Lyon, probably one of the most beautiful glens in Britain.  For the most experienced and adventurous walkers, Ben Lawers offer a very challenging walk that may take up to six hours to complete, but walkers will be rewarded with magnificent views from the top of the mountain.
